Knowledge

"It is only those who have knowledge among His slaves that fear Allah." [Faatir 35:28]

"Say: 'Are those who know equal to those who know not?' It is only men of understanding who will remember (i.e. get a lesson from Allah’s Signs and Verses)." [al-Zumar 39:9]

"And that those who have been given knowledge may know that it (this Qur'an) is the truth from your Lord, so that they may believe therein, and their hearts may submit to it with humility." [al-Hajj 22:54]

The Prophet sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam said: "When Allah wishes good for a person, He makes him understand the religion." (Agreed upon. Narrated by al-Bukhari, 69)

Ibn Mas`ood, radhiallahu `anhu, said: "True knowledge is not measured in relationship to how much you memorize and then narrate, but rather, true knowledge is an expression of piety [protecting oneself from what Allah prohibited and acting upon what He mandated]." Also, "Study and act upon what you learn." [Related by Abu Na`eem]

Sufyan Ath-Thawree, rahimahullah, said: "The excellence of knowledge is due only to the fact that it causes a person to fear and obey Allaah, otherwise it is just like anything else." [Related by ibn Rajab]

Al-Hasan al-Basree, rahimahullah, said: "Whoever learns something in the name of Allah, seeking that which is with Him, he will win. And whoever learns something for other than Allah, he will not reach the goal, nor will his acquired knowledge bring him closer to Allah." [Related by Ibn ul Jawzee]

Malik ibn Dinar rahimahullah said, "If you come to the scholar's house and you do not find him, his house tells a story. You see his prayer mat, his copy of the Qur'an and the washroom on the side of his house. You discern a trace of the Hereafter."
